One of cinema's supreme perfectionists, Kubrick worked in almost every genre — war film, horror, science fiction, period drama — and made each a masterwork: Paths of Glory, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket. He lived as a recluse in England, controlled every aspect of his productions, and regarded film as a medium capable of philosophical depth beyond any other art form.
