Sukarno

Sukarno (1901-1970) was the founding father and first President of Indonesia, who proclaimed independence from Dutch colonial rule on 17 August 1945. He forged the Pancasila ideology (five founding principles), championed Afro-Asian solidarity at the 1955 Bandung Conference, and tried to balance nationalism, Islam, and communism through Guided Democracy. He was eased from power by General Suharto in 1967 following the 1965 coup attempt and anti-communist purge.
