Sulla

Lucius Cornelius Sulla was a Roman general and statesman who twice marched his legions on Rome itself, setting a dangerous precedent for military intervention in politics. He became Rome's first permanent dictator since the early Republic and used his power to strengthen the Senate's authority and proscribe his enemies. After reorganizing the Roman constitution he voluntarily resigned his dictatorship and retired — an act that astonished the ancient world.
