Syngman Rhee
Syngman Rhee (1875-1965) was the first President of South Korea, a Princeton-educated independence activist who spent decades lobbying Western powers against Japanese colonialism. He ruled with increasing authoritarianism, suppressing political opponents under anti-communist laws. His government survived the Korean War with US support. He was forced to resign in April 1960 following the April Revolution student uprising against electoral fraud, going into exile in Hawaii.
