Theodoric the Great

King of the Ostrogoths and ruler of Italy 493-526 CE. Raised as a hostage in Constantinople, he combined Germanic kingship with Roman administrative sophistication. His Italy was the most successful experiment in Roman-Germanic synthesis, maintaining Roman institutions, patronizing learning (Boethius, Cassiodorus), and keeping peace with the papacy, until his final paranoid years.
