Theodosius I

Born in Spain, Theodosius defeated the Goths and settled them as foederati within Roman territory. The Edict of Thessalonica (380 CE) made Nicene Christianity the official state religion. After his death the empire was permanently divided between his sons Arcadius and Honorius. He is known as 'the Great' in Eastern Christianity.
