Theramenes

Theramenes was one of the most prominent but controversial Athenian statesmen of the late fifth century BCE. He earned the nickname 'the Buskin' (a boot that fits either foot) for his political flexibility, having participated in both the oligarchic coup of the Four Hundred in 411 BCE and in the subsequent moderate government of the Five Thousand that succeeded it. He also served as a general at Arginusae in 406 BCE and was one of the generals accused when the victorious Athenian admirals failed to rescue survivors from wrecked ships. He negotiated the terms of Athens' surrender to Sparta in 404 BCE. When the Thirty Tyrants took power, he initially collaborated but opposed their extreme violence and was executed on Critias's orders without trial.
