Thomas Becket
Henry II's chancellor and closest servant, appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in the expectation that he would deliver the Church to the Crown, and who instead defended ecclesiastical jurisdiction against it with total obstinacy. Murdered in his own cathedral by four of the king's knights and canonised within three years.
