Thomas Jefferson

Author of the Declaration of Independence and third President of the United States. Jefferson's distillation of Locke, Montesquieu, and Rousseau into a founding document created the template for all subsequent republican revolutions. His diplomatic service in France (1784-1789) placed him at the epicentre of the French pre-revolutionary ferment — Lafayette consulted him while drafting the Declaration of the Rights of Man.
