Thomas More
English lawyer, statesman, and humanist. Lord Chancellor under Henry VIII (1529–1532). Author of Utopia (1516), the foundational text of the utopian literary tradition. Refused to recognise Henry VIII as Supreme Head of the Church of England; executed for treason. Canonised by the Catholic Church in 1935. His Utopia imagined a rational island society without private property.
