Tiberios III
Tiberios III, born Apsimar, was the Byzantine emperor from 698 to 705, a naval officer of Germanic origin who came to power through the military revolt that overthrew Leontios following the fall of Byzantine Carthage to the Arabs. His reign of seven years was relatively competent, employing his brother Herakleios as a capable general who conducted several successful campaigns in the east. His downfall came from the exiled and mutilated Justinian II who, making alliance with the Bulgar khan Tervel, retook Constantinople in 705. Tiberios III fled but was captured. In 706 he and Leontios were strangled while Justinian II watched, bringing to a brutal end the most stable interlude of the period between Justinian II's two reigns.
