Tiberius

Tiberius was an outstanding military commander who secured the Rhine and Danube frontiers. As emperor he was constitutionally scrupulous but personally withdrawn. The treason trials (maiestas) under his reign destroyed many senators. He spent his last decade on Capri while Sejanus ran Rome — until Tiberius had Sejanus executed for alleged conspiracy.
