Tiberius II Constantine

Tiberius II Constantine was the Byzantine emperor from 578 to 582, having served as co-ruler and effective regent during the final years of Justin II's incapacity from 574. Born of Thracian origin, he was a capable general who had served with distinction on the Danube frontier. His four-year reign was marked by genuine efforts to address the military and financial problems he inherited. Tiberius was notable for his personal generosity, distributing large amounts of gold to the poor and to the army. His reign saw the first major Slavic settlements south of the Danube. He arranged the marriage of his daughter Constantina to Maurice and designated him as successor. Tiberius died in August 582, reportedly of food poisoning.
