Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk

Czech philosopher and statesman (1850–1937) who, during the First World War, campaigned among Allied governments for an independent Czechoslovak state; founding President of Czechoslovakia (1918–1935), he built one of Central Europe's most stable liberal democracies and championed minority rights within the new republic.
