Tommy Suharto

Tommy Suharto is the youngest son of Indonesia's long-ruling president, was convicted of ordering the murder of the judge who had convicted him, and served four years. His legal name is Hutomo Mandala Putra. He was the most conspicuous of the Suharto children in the years when the family's businesses had become the standing illustration of what Indonesians meant by corruption, collusion and nepotism: he held the national clove monopoly, which set the price of the single most important agricultural input in the country, and he was granted a tax-and-tariff-free national car project in 1996 that produced a rebadged Kia and a formal complaint to the World Trade Organisation. After his father fell in 1998 he was convicted of a land fraud against the state and sentenced to eighteen months; he went on the run rather than serve it, and while a fugitive arranged the killing of Syafiuddin Kartasasmita, the Supreme Court judge who had handed down the conviction, who was shot from a motorcycle in Jakarta in July 2001. He was arrested that November, convicted of the murder in 2002, sentenced to fifteen years, and released in 2006 after remissions and reductions. He has since run a political party, bid for business licences and been named in further asset cases. His brother-in-law Prabowo Subianto became president in 2024 and his sister Titiek is a minister. The judge he had killed was shot four times on his way to work. Two former police officers were convicted as the gunmen. Indonesia has periodically revisited the Suharto family assets without recovering much of them.
