Ulrich von Jungingen
Ulrich von Jungingen (c. 1360–1410) was the 26th Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, elected in 1407. Ambitious and aggressive, he rejected a peace agreement and launched a full-scale offensive against the Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania. At the Battle of Grunwald (Tannenberg) on 15 July 1410, he led the Teutonic Knights in what proved a catastrophic defeat. Ulrich himself was killed in the fighting — one of the few Grand Masters to die in battle — and his death contributed to the psychological collapse of the Order's forces. Grunwald ended the Teutonic Order's status as a major military power.
