Ulysses S. Grant
Union Army general who commanded all Union forces from March 1864, coordinating the simultaneous campaigns that led to Confederate collapse; accepted Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865. Served as 18th President of the United States (1869–1877) and championed Reconstruction and civil rights.
