Valentinian II

Valentinian II was the younger son of Valentinian I, proclaimed western co-emperor at the age of four by Pannonian troops immediately after the elder Valentinian's sudden death in 375. His entire reign was characterized by the dominance of more powerful figures around him: first the generals and court officials who managed affairs during his childhood, then the usurper Magnus Maximus who controlled most of the western provinces from 383 to 387, and finally the Frankish general Arbogast who became his master of soldiers and de facto ruler of the west from 388 onward. In May 392 Valentinian II was found hanged in his residence at Vienne in Gaul. Arbogast claimed it was suicide; supporters of Valentinian alleged murder. He was twenty years old.
