Velupillai Prabhakaran
Founder and leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who waged a 26-year insurgency for an independent Tamil state, pioneering suicide bombing as a tactic. He was killed in May 2009 as the Sri Lankan army crushed the Tigers in the war's brutal final offensive.
