Vercassivellaunus

Vercassivellaunus was one of the four commanders of the Gallic relief army assembled to break the Roman siege of Alesia in 52 BCE, where Vercingetorix and the Arverni were besieged by Julius Caesar. According to Caesar's own account in the Gallic Wars, Vercassivellaunus commanded the 60,000-man contingent that made the most dangerous assault on the weakest point of Caesar's outer fortifications, nearly breaking through and forcing Caesar himself to ride to that sector with his last reserves to stabilize the line. He was captured after the decisive Gallic defeat and was presumably displayed in Caesar's triumph.
