Vercingetorix

Arverni chieftain who united Gallic tribes in the revolt of 52 BCE against Caesar. Adopted a brilliant scorched-earth strategy, denying Caesar supplies, and defeated him at Gergovia. Made the fatal error of taking refuge in Alesia, where Caesar's double fortifications doomed the garrison. Surrendered dramatically on horseback. Held prisoner in Rome for six years and strangled after Caesar's triumph.
