Viriathus
Lusitanian shepherd-warrior who survived a Roman massacre and became the most effective guerrilla commander Rome faced in Spain. Led the Lusitanians against Rome for eight years, outfighting Roman commanders in the mountain terrain. Forced Rome to sign a peace treaty (later repudiated) recognising Lusitanian independence. Assassinated in his sleep by his own envoys, bribed by Rome. National hero of Portugal.
