Vitellius

Aulus Vitellius was proclaimed emperor by the Rhine legions in January 69 CE while still in Germany. His forces defeated Otho's army at the First Battle of Bedriacum in April and Vitellius entered Rome as emperor. He was known for his lavish banquets and indulgent lifestyle. Within months the Danubian and eastern legions proclaimed Vespasian, and Vitellius's forces were defeated at the Second Battle of Bedriacum in October. He attempted to abdicate but was prevented by his supporters and by the Praetorian Guard. When Vespasian's forces entered Rome in December 69 CE, Vitellius was captured hiding in the palace, dragged through the streets, tortured, killed, and thrown into the Tiber.
