Vytautas the Great
Vytautas the Great (c. 1350–1430) was Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1401 to 1430, one of the most powerful rulers in medieval Europe. At its greatest extent, his realm stretched from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Though technically subordinate to his cousin Jagiello as King of Poland, Vytautas exercised effective sovereignty over Lithuania. He co-commanded the Polish-Lithuanian forces at the Battle of Grunwald (1410), directing the Lithuanian wing. His ambitions for the title of King of Lithuania were thwarted by his death in 1430, just before the planned coronation.
