Wenceslaus (Wenceslas IV of Bohemia)
Wenceslaus, son of Charles IV, inherited his father's Bohemian crown at age two and was elected King of the Romans in 1376. Wenceslaus proved entirely unequal to the immense challenges of ruling the empire in a period of profound religious crisis and political turbulence. In 1400, the four Rhenish electors took the unprecedented step of formally deposing Wenceslaus as King of Germany, declaring him incompetent, and electing Rupert of the Palatinate in his place. Wenceslaus refused to recognize his deposition but made no serious effort to recover the German crown. He died in 1419 just as the Hussite Wars were beginning.
