Wilhelm I, Emperor of Germany
Wilhelm I was King of Prussia from 1861 and first German Emperor from 1871 until his death in 1888. A professional soldier shaped by the Napoleonic Wars, he initially resisted many of Bismarck's more aggressive proposals but consistently backed his Chancellor when it mattered. His reign saw the three wars of German unification and the establishment of the Bismarckian Empire. Though overshadowed politically by Bismarck, Wilhelm provided the monarchical legitimacy essential to the unification project and was a popular symbol of German national pride.
