William Hogarth

Invented the modern print series — A Rake's Progress, Gin Lane — sold cheaply enough to reach a public with no access to paintings, and satirical about the London he lived in. He lobbied Parliament for the 1735 Engravers' Copyright Act, which was passed largely to stop his own work being pirated and is a foundation of artists' copyright.
