William I (the Conqueror)
Duke of Normandy who conquered England at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, fundamentally transforming English society, culture, and governance. He introduced the feudal system on a systematic scale and commissioned the Domesday Book, a comprehensive survey of English landholding. His reign established the Norman dynasty and permanently altered the English language and aristocracy.
