William II of the Netherlands
William II had fought at Waterloo and was known as a military hero. Faced with the revolutionary wave of 1848 sweeping Europe, he abruptly accepted a liberal constitutional revision drafted by Johan Rudolf Thorbecke, transforming the Netherlands into a parliamentary monarchy. He is said to have declared he became a liberal overnight.
