William II (Rufus)
Third son of William the Conqueror who seized the English throne on his father's death, ruling with an iron hand and frequently clashing with the Church. He expanded royal power at the expense of the barons and Archbishop Anselm. He died mysteriously in a hunting accident in the New Forest, possibly assassinated, and was succeeded by his younger brother Henry.
