William Prescott
Massachusetts militia colonel who commanded the Patriot forces entrenched on Breed's Hill and Bunker Hill on 17 June 1775; his order to hold fire until the British were within close range maximised Patriot firepower, inflicting over 1,000 British casualties before ammunition ran out and the position was abandoned.
