William T. Sherman
Union general who captured Atlanta in September 1864 then led the March to the Sea—a 480 km advance from Atlanta to Savannah destroying Confederate infrastructure—pioneering the strategy of total war. Later Commanding General of the US Army (1869–1883), he directed campaigns against Native Americans on the Great Plains.
