Yemelyan Pugachev
Don Cossack who led the largest popular revolt in Russian history (1773–1775), falsely claiming to be the murdered Tsar Peter III. Mobilised serfs, Cossacks, Bashkir, Tatar, and Ural factory workers with promises of freedom from serfdom and taxation. His army of 30,000 captured Orenburg and Kazan. Captured, brought to Moscow in an iron cage, and publicly quartered on 10 January 1775.
