Yuri Andropov
Soviet General Secretary (1982–1984) and long-serving KGB chairman who succeeded Leonid Brezhnev; during his brief 15-month tenure he initiated limited anti-corruption campaigns and promoted younger reformers including Mikhail Gorbachev; died of kidney failure on 9 February 1984 before his reform agenda could take shape.
