Han dynasty envoy sent west by Emperor Wu in 138 BCE to seek allies against the Xiongnu; captured and held for a decade, he eventually reached Bactria and the Fergana Valley, and his reports on Central Asian kingdoms opened the trade networks that became the Silk Road.
