Algeria

Algeria is a large North African state on the Mediterranean coast, the largest country in Africa by area, with most of its territory occupied by the Sahara. A French colony from 1830, it gained independence in 1962 after a long and bloody war of liberation. Its capital is Algiers and its economy rests heavily on hydrocarbon exports of oil and natural gas.
