Arkansas
A cotton-and-Delta state in its east and an Ozark upland in its northwest, Arkansas blended Deep South plantation society with Appalachian hill culture. It seceded in 1861 after Fort Sumter and remained largely rural and poor into the 20th century. Little Rock's Central High School became a national flashpoint of school desegregation in 1957.
