Armenia

Armenia declared independence from the Soviet Union on September 21, 1991, and joined the CIS. Armenian independence was accompanied by the outbreak of war with Azerbaijan over the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, a conflict that had been suppressed during the Soviet period and erupted as central authority dissolved.
