Ashanti Colony

Following the fourth Anglo-Ashanti War (1900), Britain formally annexed the Ashanti Empire as a Crown Colony in 1901. The Ashanti Kingdom had been the dominant power in the Gold Coast interior; its capital Kumasi had been burned in 1874. By 1957 the territory was incorporated into independent Ghana.
