Australia
Australia, inhabited by Aboriginal peoples for at least 65,000 years, was colonised by Britain from 1788 as a penal settlement. The six colonies federated in 1901. Participation in both World Wars - particularly Gallipoli (1915) - was formative for national identity. Australia is a developed democracy and the world's 13th-largest economy, rich in mineral and agricultural exports.
