Austria
Austria, the core of the Habsburg Empire, became a small landlocked republic after World War I. German annexation (Anschluss, 1938) and Allied occupation (1945-55) shaped its 20th century. The 1955 State Treaty restored sovereignty under permanent neutrality. Austria joined the EU in 1995. A German-speaking democracy of 9 million, Austria is known for its cultural heritage and role as an international diplomatic hub in Vienna.
