Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan declared independence from the Soviet Union on August 30, 1991, and joined the CIS. The Azerbaijani independence period was immediately marked by war with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh, a conflict that resulted in significant territorial losses for Azerbaijan and produced hundreds of thousands of refugees on both sides.
