Aztec Empire (Mexica Triple Alliance)

The Aztec Empire, formally the Triple Alliance of Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tlacopan, was the dominant power in central Mexico from 1428 until its conquest by Hernán Cortés in 1521. Its capital Tenochtitlan was one of the largest cities in the world, and the empire extracted tribute from hundreds of subject peoples across Mesoamerica. The empire's complex political structure, with numerous subject polities and disaffected peoples, facilitated the Spanish conquest by providing Cortés with indigenous allies.
