Belgium

Belgium became an independent state in 1830 following a revolution against Dutch rule, with its neutrality guaranteed by the great powers. It was invaded and largely occupied by Germany in both World Wars despite its neutrality. Belgium rapidly industrialised in the 19th century and built a large colonial empire centred on the Congo.
