British Columbia

British Columbia — the Pacific coast. A separate colony joined to Canada in 1871 on the promise of a transcontinental railway, its history was driven by gold rushes, resource extraction (timber, mining, ports) and waves of Chinese, South Asian and Japanese immigration. Mild, mountainous and Asia-facing, with Vancouver's strongly Asian-Canadian character, a deep environmental and outdoor ethos, and the most powerful, largely unceded First Nations presence in Canada (its Northwest-Coast totem art), it feels a world apart from the eastern provinces.
