British Cyprus

British Cyprus was a British Crown Colony, an eastern Mediterranean island acquired from the Ottoman Empire. Strategically placed near the Levant and the approaches to Suez, it became a contested home to Greek and Turkish communities whose rivalry shaped a turbulent path to independence as the Republic of Cyprus in 1960.
