British Guiana

British Guiana was a British colony on the northern coast of South America, formed from former Dutch settlements and built on a plantation economy of sugar worked first by enslaved Africans and later by indentured South Asian labourers. This legacy shaped its diverse population. It became the independent state of Guyana in 1966.
