Brunei
Brunei is a small, oil-rich sultanate on the northern coast of Borneo in Southeast Asia, surrounded by Malaysian territory, with its capital at Bandar Seri Begawan. Once the seat of a powerful maritime sultanate that dominated much of Borneo and the southern Philippines, it became a British protectorate before gaining full independence in 1984, retaining an absolute monarchy sustained by petroleum wealth.
