Chile
Chile was the site of the world's first democratically elected Marxist government under Salvador Allende (1970–1973), overthrown in a US-supported military coup by General Augusto Pinochet. The Pinochet dictatorship (1973–1990) applied radical free-market economic policies while conducting systematic state terror, becoming the centrepiece of Operation Condor. Chile returned to democracy in 1990.
