Colony of Barbados

The Colony of Barbados was a British possession in the eastern Caribbean, among the earliest and most prosperous English plantation colonies. Its economy rested on sugar produced by large numbers of enslaved Africans, leaving a deep demographic and social imprint. It remained under continuous British rule until gaining independence in 1966.
